The Everywhereist Loves Snacks and Rand

I came across The Everywhereist through Time Magazine last year, and I’ve never looked back. You won’t either once you read: WTF Weds: 12 of the Most Baffling Airplane Passengers I’ve Encoutered  And: Dick Move, Lego Store Lady. And thank you, New York.  And: 15 things I didn’t know when I started dating an entrepreneur.

Aside from Geraldine’s wit, what keeps me coming back is… her love for Rand! It’s so inspiring to see a couple kissing, smiling, and traveling. I’m happy to see her documenting it all.

GirlHabits: Do you think you’ll ever stop traveling?

Geraldine DeRuiter: I think there will definitely be a time when my rate of travel slows down. But do I think I’ll ever stop traveling entirely? Definitely not. If I stay still for too long, my family and everyone to whom I owe money will find me.

GH: What do you wish there was less of in the world?

GD: Famine, alarm clocks, violence, waiting in line, litter, yelling, poverty, uncomfortable shoes, disease, ignorance, fast food, pollution, traffic, deforestation, hate. I’d be happy if we could just chuck all of those out the window. But that would inherently result in more littering.

GH: Your favourite blog entry is: ____ and why?

GD: I absolutely loved creating this series of photo-comics featuring my husband and uncle in Rome. It’s 80% based on actual events.

GH: If you had to let go of something to make your own path, what would you say that was?

GD: My addiction to reddit. That site has distracted me on a nearly-daily basis. And yet, I love it.

GH: If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?

GD: I can’t decide between flying, teleportation, or the ability to speak French. Every single one of those super powers would make travel so much easier.

GH: Name a few places that are on your travel wish list:

GD: I really want to visit Istanbul (the husband and I have been talking about it for years), and weirdly, I want to check out Niagara Falls. We technically haven’t had a honeymoon, and I think it would be riotous if we ended up there.

GH: What’s the weirdest thing that has made you cry?

GD: The end of Monsters, Inc., when Sully says goodbye to Boo. I absolutely bawled. Still no idea why. My husband thought I had lost my mind.

Him: It’s a kids’ movie!

Me: THEN WHY IS IT SO SAD?

Him: It’s not!

Me: Then WHY AM I CRYING?

Him: I have no idea.

GH: What do you consider the most important event in your life so far?

GD: I’m gonna have to go with my own birth. That seems pretty significant.

GH: What’s your favourite food memory?

GD: When I was four or five, my older cousin took me out for tiramisu at the Italian restaurant where he worked. Instead of cocoa powder on top, the dessert was studded with chocolate chips (a brilliant modification). I sat on a high stool at the counter, my feet dangling far above the ground, and gobbled it up. My cousin had dark memories of having to deal with the aftermath – a five-year-old hepped up on sugar and espresso – but I remember that day fondly.

GH: Your best tip for making love thrive is:_________

GD: The first time I read this, I missed the word “thrive”, blushed and thought, “Getting naked?” And now that I’ve read the question properly, I’m sticking with that answer.

GH: How do you show yourself self-love?

GD: I thought that was one of those things that everyone does but no one talks about. HA! So let’s just go with cupcakes. Lots of cupcakes, in the company of good friends.

GH: What’s your next big challenge?

GD: Getting my husband to understand my laundry sorting system. We had a lengthy discussion over what constituted undergarments.

Geraldine’s Bio:

Geraldine is a traveller, blogger, and snack enthusiast. She is constantly exploring new places in search of either the meaning of life or just a really, really good cupcake (she’s pretty sure the two are related).
